Lonely Planet review for FAO Schwartz
The toystore giant, where Tom Hanks played footsy piano in the movie Big, is number one on the NYC wish list of most visiting kids. Why not indulge them? The magical (over-the-top consumerist) wonderland, with dolls up for ‘adoption, ’ life-size stuffed animals, gas-powered kiddie convertibles, air-hockey sets and much more, might even thrill you, too.

The cheapest trip in town
janeyo recommends this,
Step inside FAO Schwarz and you're immediately thrown into an altered state. This Wonka-esque wonderland is the trippiest spot in town, where a 'nurse' presides over a nursery of 'babies' (creepily life-like newborn dolls), mini-medics can learn how to snap on a pair of gloves with their own miniature doctor's office, or you can make your own doll from a Burton-esque wall of dismembered limbs, heads, wigs and torsos.
You can make your own Muppet at the Muppet workshop, get sugar-high on the array of Jelly Belly beans and have a chat with Spanky the Talking Bear.
Who said this was a kids' store? If you're feeling fragile, this place will spin you so far out you'll wonder how you'll ever make it back to your hotel.
