Lonely Planet review for Peter Luger Steakhouse

Here long before Williamsburg became Slackerville, New York’s most famous steakhouse looks smack out of its 1887 birthday. The sirloin cuts ($43 for single steak, $82 for a two-person one) are juicy and live up to their legend (and don’t the loveably brusque waitstaff in aprons know it), but you’ll need to reserve a month ahead (!) to get a good dinner time. Cash only.

    Nothing quite like Luger

    andy_murdock recommends this,

Yep, it's expensive and it looks like an old German beer hall in need of a renovation. I might not eat here many times in my life, but I certainly don't regret going.

The steak, while it didn't make me get on my knees and pray to the meat gods, it got close. Really high quality meat.

One of the best reasons to go is for the waiter theater: these guys turn the attitude up to 11, but it's all hilarious. A person at a nearby table asked the waiter, "Is the cheesecake good?" He replies, "If you don't like it, you can throw it in my face." Too good.

    Overpriced and overrated

    realaud does not recommend this,

This landmark restaurant is well past it's heyday. The steak (you can only have porterhouse) is tasty, but there are other places that serve it equally well. The decor leaves a lot to be desired, but those who go, go for the steak (and the chance to perhaps dine with a celebrity).

You will wait for your seating, but the bar area is very crowded and you really have to enjoy closeness with strangers in order not to be freaked out. The building is so old, I don't know how it keeps passing it's building inspection. If you do go, try to get a seat downstairs.

For my money, I'd find one of the very many fine steakhouses in New York that offer a comfortable dining experience with a little more menu choice.
