Lonely Planet review
If only these walls could talk… The Carlton Arms has gone through many incarnations during its 100 years as a hotel, from nights of subterfuge (the lobby was a speakeasy during Prohibition) to days of dereliction (as a refuge for addicts and prostitutes in the 1960s). These days the Carlton Arms feels equal parts art gallery and budget hotel.
Artwork adorns the interiors, with murals following the walls up five flights of stairs, and into each of the tiny guest rooms and shared bathrooms (there is a small sink in each guest room). Not surprisingly, it draws an eclectic mix of Bohemian travelers, who don’t mind the rustic accommodations in exchange for big savings. Prepare to work those legs: there’s no lift.
Our independent authors have visited Carlton Arms Hotel and selected this as one of our recommended hotels in Union Square, Flatiron District & Gramercy.

1981, when the hotel's manager had a complete nervous breakdown, Ed Ryan, back in New York from ten years of world traveling, inherited the job.
'The hotel started its downward slide about 30 years ago and had reached a good groove own by 20 years ago. By the early '80s, the Carlton Arms was full with madmen, junkies, comedians, ex-cons, pushers and hookers, transvestites, drunks and nuts of all kinds, women who beat you in exchange for your pay, a new generation of hippies and life's lost and lonely. It was a place to bed down and indulge,' he explains.
