'Cesca
Though it’s renowned for its upscale Italian fare, the cozy front lounge and bar area here are also worth a trek. With lots of dark wood, some romantic tables and a large free-floating bar in the center of the room, the front area of ’Cesca is handsome in a gentlemen’s smoking lounge sort of way. There’s an impressive list of wines by the glass, plus great bar food.

Bacaro
Behold Venice in Chinatown (minus the rising canal waters). Based on a blue-collar Venetian pub, Bacaro serves up filling snacks called cicchetti, which you can wash down with robust wine from northern Italy. The downstairs is a spacious and cavernous dining area, while the rustic bar space on the 1st floor – made from reclaimed barn wood – is where the drinking gets done. Popular cicchetti include fried rice balls, asparagus with baked egg, crostini, bruschetta, meat and cheese platters, and insalata polpi (octopus salad).

Uva
A cozy little wine bar on a quiet Upper East Side block, Uva has four graceful tables under a purple awning on the sidewalk and a small, tiny garden out back with French doors and votive candles. Both spaces are pretty, but many find the real gem is the small brick-walled room in between, where couples cuddle on benches along the wall and sip bold and earthy Italian reds and silky, ephemeral whites long into the night.

Bourgeois Pig
The bordello-esque Bourgeois Pig is a far cry from the trashy chic bars found in these parts. Amid a setting of royal-hued wallpaper, gilded mirrors and a glowing chandelier, you can sink into a velvety armchair, drink wine and nibble on tartines, cheese plates or fondue, and contemplate the nature of your bourgeois pig existence. On Mondays and Tuesdays, bottles of wine are half price.

Black Mountain Wine House
Despite its proximity to bustling Smith St, Black Mountain feels more Aspen retreat than Carroll Gardens wine bar. The mostly neighborhood crowd gives high marks for the cozy vibe (enhanced by the fireplace), tasty small plates (ricotta pie, mac ’n’ cheese, charcuterie platter – each $10) and well-curated and reasonably priced wine selection ($8 to $10 per glass).

City Winery
Michael Dorf, the creator of the Knitting Factory, turns his attention to wine, food, and song in this 21,000-sq-ft concert hall and winery. There’s a wine bar, a Murray’s cheese counter, a wine-centric restaurant and a stage that has played host to Rufus Wainwright, Joshua Bell, Natalie Cole and others.

Slide inside this modernist wine bar, where one wall is covered with bottles of the good stuff, and prepare to be charmed. Nectar is low key and relaxed, pairing its selection of red, white and dessert wines with panini and artisanal cheeses from around the world (helpfully described on the menu).

Bowery Wine Company
Wine lovers can't be better served than at the Bowery Bar, which offers several dozen delicious vinos – some local, others esoteric – from a rotating menu, plus live jazz, room to dance if the spirit takes you, as well as delightful appetizers.
