The ‘people’s opera,’ founded by Mayor Fiorella LaGuardia in 1944, is one of New York’s more interesting companies, producing updated classics, neglected operas, and new and recent work. Unfortunately, it also has profound financial troubles, and in late 2011, was experiencing all kinds of labor problems. For now, the show is going on in venues around the city. But that may change.
