    Pete's Tavern

This dark and atmospheric watering hole has all the earmarks of a New York classic – all pressed tin and carved wood and an air of literary history. You can get a respectable burger here, and choose from more than 15 draft beers. The pub draws in everyone from post-theater couples and Irish expats to no-nonsense NYU students.

    McSorley’s Old Ale House

Around since 1854, McSorley’s feels far removed from the East Village veneer of cool: you’re more likely to drink with firemen, Wall St refugees and a few tourists. But (didn’t you know?) that’s become cool again. It’s hard to beat the cobwebs and sawdust floors and flip waiters who slap down two mugs of the house’s ale for every one ordered.

    Old Town Bar & Restaurant

It still looks like 1892 in here, with the original tile floors and tin ceilings – the Old Town is an ‘old world’ drinking-man’s classic (and woman’s: Madonna lit up at the bar here, when lighting up was still legal, in her Bad Girl video). There are cocktails around, but most come for an afternoon beer and burger ($10.25), both very good.

    White Horse Tavern

It’s a bit on the tourist trail, but that doesn’t dampen the century-old, pubby dark-wood, tin-ceiling atmosphere where Dylan Thomas had his last drink (too many beers led to his 1953 death), a tipsy Jack Kerouac got kicked out, and we had a friendly NBA debate with the South Park guys one night. Sit at the long oak bar inside or on sidewalk tables.

    Peter McManus Tavern

Pouring drafts since the 1930s, this family-run dive is something of a museum to the world of the McManuses: photos of yesteryear, an old telephone booth and Tiffany glass. There’s also greasy bar food to eat at the cute green booths. Hurrah for the McManus!
