City Center
This red-domed wonder almost went the way of the wrecking ball in 1943, but was saved by preservationists, only to face extinction again when its major ballet companies departed for Lincoln Center. Today, this overlooked treasure hosts the Paul Taylor Dance Company, Alvin Ailey and American Ballet Theater, as well as the New York Flamenco Festival in February and other dance performances.

Brooklyn Academy of Music
The Howard Gilman Opera House and Harvey Lichtenstein Theater at this varied arts complex host their share of ballet, modern and world dance performances, often hosting the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the Bill T Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company and the Mark Morris Dance Group, which is headquartered across the street. Visiting troupes – many of whom arrive for the annual (and very popular) Next Wave festival – have ranged from the Pina Bausch Dance Theater to DanceAfrica and Brazil’s contemporary Benguelê and Breu.

Be sure to get as close as you can afford, as high-up seats remove you greatly from the pomp and circumstance onstage
