Deli restaurants in New Orleans

  1. A

    Mother’s

Despite what you may hear, Mother’s isn’t the best po’boy around, but it did invent the debris po’boy (‘debris’ being the bits of roast beef that fall into the gravy and get all soft and lovely) and serves the justifiably famous Ferdi Special, loaded up with ham, roast beef and debris. Breakfast is brilliantly done and served in ponderously enormous portions.

    Verti Marte

Sometimes you just wanna wander the Quarter with a good burger or seafood sandwich in hand. If that’s the case, get ye to Verti, a reliable deli with a take-out stand that’s got a menu as long as a hot New Orleans summer day. If you’re in your hotel room at 3am and craving some ribs (with two sides!), rejoice, for Verti delivers free anywhere in the French Quarter and Faubourg Marigny.

    Stein’s Deli

Stein’s is more of a center for the city’s Jewish population than any one synagogue. If lunch, for you, rests on quality sandwiches, cheese and cold cuts, this is as good as New Orleans gets. Owner Dan Stein is a fanatic about keeping his deli stocked with great Italian and Jewish meats and cheeses and some very fine boutique beers: the man even hosts his own beer-brewing classes.

    Louisiana Products

On historic Julia Row, Louisiana Products has the feel of an overcrowded country store, but it's really a deli, with limited seating and inexpensive breakfasts and lunches. If you're headed to a nearby museum, join the construction workers and office workers for ham, eggs and cheese on a French roll for breakfast or a mini-muffuletta for lunch.

    St James Cheese Co

St James was founded by an Englishman obsessed with all the right things: namely, meat and fermented milk product. There’s a veritable atlas worth of cheese on sale, plus excellent sandwiches like mozzarella with basil pesto and salami. Hosts frequent cheese tastings.

    Nola Grocery

One of our favorite hidden-in-plain-sight gems in the city is this tiny deli. The friendly dudes behind the counter make their boudin on site, do up some mean po’boys and generally provide the best feed for under $10 you’ll likely find in the CBD.

    Zara’s

This local grocery store has some good produce and a solid deli that cranks out very decent po’boys, plus other variations on salads and sandwiches.
