Ray Charles wrote 'Early in the Morning, ' about Dooky's, local civil rights leaders used the spot as an informal headquarters in the 1960s and Barack Obama ate here when he visited New Orleans after his inauguration. This soul-food spot is a neighborhood backbone and serves perhaps the best meal for any vegetarian visiting New Orleans: gumbo z'herbes. Served on Thursdays during Lent, its green and gorgeous with mustards, beet tops, spinach, kale, collards and Lord knows what else.
