Perhaps the city’s most venerable old hotel, the Monteleone is also the French Quarter’s largest. (Not long after the Monteleone was built, preservationists put a stop to building on this scale below Iberville St.) Since its inception in 1866, the hotel has been the local lodging of choice for writers, including luminaries like William Faulkner, Truman Capote and Rebecca Wells. The Carousel Bar – a New Orleans classic – has appeared in numerous films and TV shows. Rooms throughout exude an old-world appeal with French toile and chandeliers.
