The Mississippi River is the drawcard of this vast, 1616-room convention hotel. Rooms on higher floors have the kind of river views you'd expect - nestle back in the purely chain hotel surrounds and watch the traffic on Old Man River.
Finished in time for the 1988 Republican Party National Convention (it was the headquarters), the Hilton has the kind of charm that warms a suburban conservative's soul. Its soaring, bland lobby is reminiscent of a shopping mall. The pebbly concrete exterior matches the interior for aesthetics. Rooms are a standard beige scheme that is offset by greens and a palm motif. But in this instance size begets pleasure as there are two outdoor pools, whirlpool, sauna, indoor tennis courts, exercise centre and modest spa. Although the Hilton will win no awards for charm, its greatest benefit to guests may just be its size. Prices plummet when the Big Easy is not busy. A small five-storey annexe above the Riverwalk Mall has more intimate charms.
