Lucy the Margate Elephant , a 65ft-high wooden pachyderm constructed in 1881 as a developer's truly weird scheme to attract land buyers to the area. It was variously used as a hotel, beach cottage, private mansion and last, a tavern, but rowdy patrons almost destroyed her.
The 190-acre Cape May Point State Park, just off Lighthouse Ave, has 2 miles of trails, plus the famous Cape May Lighthouse. Built in 1859, the 157ft lighthouse recently underwent a $2 million restoration, and its completely reconstructed light is visible as far as 25 miles out to sea. You can climb the 199 stairs to the top in the summer months.

Today it's a collection of amusement rides, games of chance, candy stands and 'the biggest Go-Kart track in South Jersey!'.
The Liberty State Park hosts outdoor concerts with the Manhattan skyline as a backdrop and has a great bike trail, and also operates ferries to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Also in the park is the expansive and modern Liberty Science Center , which is especially great for kids.
In Cape May town, the Emlen Physick Estate, an 18-room mansion built in 1879, now houses the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts, which books tours for Cape May historic homes, the lighthouse or nearby historic Cold Spring Village. Hours change frequently at the center; call for details.
The Absecon Lighthouse dates from 1857 and, at 171ft high, ranks as the tallest in New Jersey and the third tallest in the country. It’s been restored to its original specifications (including the Frensel lens) and you can climb the 228 steps to the top for phenomenal views.
The 3348-acre Kittatinny Valley State Park is home to lakes with boat launches, lime outcroppings and campsites, plus former railroads that have been converted into hiking and cycling trails.
