    Lake Champlain Chocolates

    The aroma of rich chocolate is intoxicating as you make your way past the gift shop (if you can) to the glass wall overlooking the small factory here. No, you can’t run through the chocolate waterfall, but you’ll probably savor some samples during one of the tour’s several taste tests. Back in the store, you can purchase an array of chocolate truffles, bars, coins and placesetting snowmen or gift baskets. The café serves coffee drinks and its own luscious ice cream.

    Several miles north of Ben & Jerry’s on VT 100N, Cold Hollow Cider Mill shows how it makes its famous cider doughnuts (guaranteed love at first bite). The cider itself tastes so crisp and fresh you’d swear there was a spigot coming right out of the apple. The gift shop is packed with the most inventive gourmet goodies selection in town, including corn relish, horseradish jam and piccalilli.

    Brattleboro Farmers Market

    Offering an excellent crash course in Vermont food, the Brattleboro Farmers Market boasts as many as 70 local vendors selling cheese, free-range beef and lamb, honey, pastries, maple syrup and fruit. Live music and a lively crafts scene round out the experience. The Saturday market is just west of town by the Creamery Bridge, while the Wednesday market is held in the Merchants Bank Building parking lot off Main St.

    Heading north along VT 30 from Dorset, you’ll pass through the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it village of Pawlet. Stop at the fine old-fashioned Mach’s General Store, which generates its electricity from an adjacent stream passing through a gorge. You can see all this from inside the store, thanks to a glass counter.

    Head to this friendly, laid-back local favorite for an unusually complete selection of clothing, gear and bikes specifically designed for women. Don’t worry, guys; there’s plenty here for you too. For winter fun, it offers Nordic skis, snowshoes and outerwear. It’s open for slightly longer hours in the summer.
