Salem Getting there & around

Getting there & around

Salem lies 20 miles northeast of Boston, a 35-minute drive on MA 1A (longer during rush hour). Both the Newburyport and Rockport lines of the MBTA commuter rail (617-722-3200, 800-392-6100; www.mbta.com) run from Boston’s North Station to Salem Depot ($5.25, 30 minutes). Trains run every 30 minutes during the morning and evening rush hours, hourly during the rest of day, and less frequently on weekends. The MBTA buses 450 or 455 from Boston’s Haymarket Sq (near North Station) take longer than the train and cost no less.
