    Motif No 1

Dock Sq is the hub of Rockport. Visible from here, the red fishing shack decorated with colorful buoys is known as Motif No 1. So many artists of great and minimal talent have been painting and photographing it for so long that it well deserves its tongue-in-cheek name. Actually, it should be called Motif No 1-B, as the original shack vanished during a great storm in 1978 and a brand-new replica was erected in its place.

  2. Pigeon Cove Lobster Co

If your lodging includes kitchen facilities, consider the ultimate New England culinary experience: buying your lobsters live and boiling them yourself. Head to Pigeon Cove for live lobsters straight from the trap and piping-hot, award-winning clam chowder. This is where the fishers are unloading their daily catch from their boats and – if you wish – into your pot. You can expect to pay $6 to $8 per pound for hard-shell lobsters, and slightly less for soft-shell.

    Roy Moore Lobster Company

This takeout kitchen has the cheapest lobster-in-the-rough on the Neck. Your beast comes on a tray with melted butter, a fork and a wet wipe for cleanup. You can sit in the back with the fishing boats on a few tables fashioned from lobster traps, or head next door to the restaurant for a bit of refinement. Don’t forget to bring your own beer or wine.
