A longtime favorite with students and junior faculty, Geoff’s offers a massive menu of creative sandwiches, including meatless reuben (melted swiss, spinach, carrots, sauerkraut), pastrami, kosher meat and lots of things with celery salt. Find scant seating, checked linoleum floor, and a big barrel of pickles.

    Geoff's has a vast selection of sandwiches using the basics and then some, to produce great flavors and that's what makes it "superlative". The atmosphere is probably grungy by modern standards with brick walls, tight seating and a pickle barrel for customers to dunk into but the hole in the wall locale is part of historical Providence's colonial/mill atmosphere, and some people appreciate that. I hadn't been there for about 25 years and the staff (mostly college students) that used to be known for their cocky attitude was much more congenial (maybe it's because I look older and meaner now). The food was good and fresh although it's a little pricey as it always was, I paid 7.50 for a (canned) salmon sandwich with melted cheese, dressing and fresh vegetables but I really enjoyed it; the sandwiches don't look as humongous as they did years ago but I guess it's all relative as I was 20 pounds lighter then. Geoff's may be considered a little pricey by some but there's good quality and atmosphere here if you like old digs. There was slim pickings for dessert, some cellophane wrapped cookies and they had run out of whoopee pies but it was just an afterthought for me; the inventive, satisfying sandwiches are the main attraction.
