Portsmouth is equidistant from Boston and Portland, Maine. It takes about 1ΒΌ hours to travel the 57 miles via I-95 in either direction.
Greyhound/Vermont Transit (603-433-3210, 800-552-8737; www.vermonttransit.com) runs several daily buses on a route connecting Boston and Portsmouth with Portland, Bangor and Bar Harbor, Maine. Portsmouth to Boston costs $16 one way. Buses stop either on Hanover St (between High and Fleet Sts) or at the C&J Trailways Center (603-430-1100; www.cjtrailways.com; 185 Grafton Dr), located 3.5 miles west of downtown (off NH-33). C&J Trailways buses run similar routes at like prices.
Once in Portsmouth, the Coast Trolley Downtown Loop (603-743-5777; per ride $0.50, 3-day pass $2; 8:45am-8:45pm Mon-Sat, 11:45am-8:45pm Sun Jun-Sep) provides shuttle service between public parking lots, Market Sq and the major historic sights around town. Pick up a schedule and route map at the Market Sq information kiosk.
