Although Portland has more distinctive sleeping options, the Hilton Garden Inn isn't bad for a chain hotel. The service is friendly and professional, the rooms are trim and comfortable, and the amenities are abundant. It's also in a great location, being the only downtown hotel directly overlooking the waterfront.

If you cringe at the thought of staying in a B&B and making forced conversation with strangers around a tiny breakfast table, then the Hilton may be for you. Anonymity is assured at this 120-room hotel, with a zero-percent-chance that you'll be swapping small talk with your host as you enter or exit your quarters. Built in 2003, the Hilton is Portland's newest hotel, and its titanium siding makes it stand out a bit from its brick neighbors. Inside, the rooms are a little tamer, with subdued carpeting, pleasant and flattering color schemes and sizeable beds (either queen- or king-sized). The best feature, however, is the large windows, which provide ample light and fine views. This is particularly true if you're willing to pay up for a splendid harbor-facing room - the surest way to liven up your plaid and beige surroundings.
