Newport

Getting there & around

If you need a lift to TF Green Airport ($25, 45 minutes) in Warwick, Cozy Cab (401-846-2500, 800-846-1502) provides a shuttle service. Reservations are recommended.

While most everyone drives to Newport in their own car, some favor the summertime ferries. RIPTA (401-781-9400, 800-221-3797; www.ripta.com) runs a boat from Providence to Perrotti Park Landing near the Newport Gateway Transportation & Visitor Center (adult/child $8/free, 65 minutes, five to six times daily). From July to early September, Interstate Navigation (401-783-4613; www.blockislandferry.com) ferries depart from a dock near Fort Adams to Old Harbor in Block Island (one way/round-trip $10/15, two hours, one daily).

Bonanza Bus Lines (401-846-1820; 800-343-9999; www.peterpanbus.com), at the Newport Gateway Transportation & Visitors Center, operates buses to Boston ($20, 1¾ hours, four to five daily).

RIPTA sends bus 60 between Providence and Newport ($1.25, one hour) almost every hour. For the South Kingstown Amtrak station, take No 60 ($1.25, 90 minutes, five buses Monday to Friday, three on Saturday). Most RIPTA buses arrive and depart from the Newport Gateway Transportation & Visitors Center (23America’s Cup Ave). Also stop at the center for help with local bus services around Newport.

Parking is tough in Newport. The very lucky might find free parking on the street, though most non-metered spots are reserved for Newport residents. The most convenient garage is at the Newport Gateway Transportation & Visitors Center, which gives you the first half-hour for free, the next for $2 and each additional half-hour for $1, up to $15.25 per day.
