New London’s transportation center is the Amtrak train station (cnr Water & State Sts); the bus station is in the same building and the ferry terminal (for boats to Long Island, Block Island and Fishers Island) is next door.

Land

Car & motorcycle

For New London, take I-95 exit 84, then go north on CT 32 (Mohegan Ave) for the US Coast Guard Academy, or take I-95 exits 82, 83 or 84 and go south for the city center. CT 32 will also whisk you north to Mohegan Sun Casino. The center of the commercial district is just southwest of the Amtrak station along Bank St. Follow Ocean Ave (CT 213) to reach Ocean Beach Park and Harkness Memorial State Park.

Boat

The Cross Sound Ferry (860-443-5281, 516-323-2525; www.longislandferry.com; 2 Ferry St) operates car ferries and high-speed passenger ferries year-round between Orient Point, Long Island, NY and New London, a 1½-hour run on the car ferry, 40 minutes on the high-speed ferry. From late June through Labor Day, ferries depart each port every hour on the hour from 7am to 9pm (last boats at 9:45pm). Off-season, boats tend to run every two hours. For high-speed ferries, the one-way rates are adult/child $16/7.75. The rates for car ferries are adult/child $10.50/5. Cars cost $39, bicycles $2. Call for car reservations.

The Fishers Island Ferry (860-442-0165; www.fiferry.com; adult/child $22/16 mid-May–mid-Sept, $16/12 mid-Sept–mid-May, cars $26-40) runs cars and passengers from New London to the wealthy summer colony at Fishers Island, NY several times a day year-round.

In summer, there are daily boats between New London and Block Island, Rhode Island (adult/child $21/10).
