New Bedford

Getting there & away

The heart of the old city center is the restored historic district around Melville Mall. The area is about a mile south of I-195 via MA 18 (take the downtown exit 18S).

Peter Pan Bus (888-751-8800; www.peterpanbus.com) offers bus services to Providence ($10.50) and New York ($43) from the New Bedford ferry dock. Dattco (800-229-4879; www.dattco.com) runs 12 buses a day to Boston South Station (adult/child $12/8) from the Southeastern Regional Transit Authority (SRTA) station at the corner of Elm and Pleasant Sts.

Ferries run from the New Bedford ferry dock to Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard. A catamaran makes the quick trip in one hour with Martha’s Vineyard Express Ferry (866-663-3779; www.mvexpressferry.com) from 6:30am to 9:30pm (one way adult/bike/child/senior $29/5/15/25). Five ferries run in from mid-May to mid-October, more in summer. From I-195, take exit 15 to MA 18. Continue south on MA 18 to the fourth set of lights, turn left onto State Pier.
