Although this village is barely 7 miles from town, it thinks of itself as worlds apart. Nantucket Town may seem uncrowded and unhurried compared with the rest of the US, but Siasconset ('Sconset) takes it to another level. The petite village centers around a pair of cozy cafes, a tiny general store and a stamp-size post office.
The south shore communities of Surfside and Cisco consist almost entirely of private homes, but visitors head here for the long, broad beaches, which are among the island's best. Surfside Beach, 3 miles from Nantucket Town at the end of Surfside Rd, is a top draw with the college and 20-something set.
