    Tavern on the Water

Set at the end of the pier behind the Navy Yard, this understated tavern offers one of the finest views of the Boston harbor and city skyline. The food is not so memorable, but it’s a fine place to go to catch some rays on your face, the breeze off the water, and an ice cold one from behind the bar.

  2. B

    In a Pig’s Eye

This dark, friendly pub boasts an eclectic menu of burgers and beef stroganoff, homemade soups and tasty salads, and ‘Pig’s Eye Favorites’ like steak tips or pork chops. Despite the small space, it has live music (usually acoustic) a few nights a week.

  3. Worthen House

This old brick tavern is famed for its amazing, pulley-driven fan system (which is still operational). The pressed tin ceiling and wooden bar remain from the early days, giving this place an old-fashioned neighborhood feel. Stop by for a pint of Guinness and a burger.

  4. The Rockfish

The downstairs pub is a great place for people-watching. In warm weather take a table by the large, streetside open windows. Snarf some spicy rockfish cakes, suck on a cold beer, network with the locals, and watch the evening strollers sashay up and down State St.

  5. Maddie’s Sail Loft

The place to come for local color. Set in a historic house, old-timers pack into this little pub to wolf down fried seafood and swill some beers. It’s one block inland from State St Landing.

    Brotherhood of Thieves

Nantucketers come here for the friendly tavern atmosphere - all brick and dark woods - and the island's best burgers. Good fresh seafood too, including sweet Nantucket scallops.
