Lonely Planet review
Another enjoyable feature of a Berkshires summer is taking in a show by Shakespeare & Company. The repertoire also includes Shakespeare's plays and contemporary performances, such as The Secret of Sherlock Holmes and Tom Stoppard's Rough Crossing .
The summertime Bankside Festival (413 637 3353) stages plays, demonstrations and talks that are held outdoors at the south end of the property and free to all. It's named for Elizabethan London's seedy Banksyde district, and not after some lame financial house. The company is also in the process of building the world's first historically accurate replica of London's Rose Playhouse, complete with surrounding Elizabethan village. Right now it's just got some bleachers and a tent. Huzzah?
