You can reach Cape Ann quickly from Boston or North Shore towns via four-lane Rte 128, but the scenic route on MA 127 follows the coastline through the prim villages of Prides Crossing, Manchester-by-the-Sea and Magnolia. Alternatively, take the Rockport line of the MBTA commuter rail (617-722-3200, 800-392-6100; www.mbta.com) from Boston’s North Station to Gloucester ($7.25, one hour).
