Lonely Planet review for Shelburne Museum

On a 45-acre estate, 7 miles south of Burlington in Shelburne, the Shelburne Museum boasts a stellar collection of American folk art, New England architecture and, well, just about everything. The wildly eclectic collection ranges from an early American sawmill to the Lake Champlain side-wheeler steamship Ticonderoga. How's that for lawn decor?

Worth A Stop No Matter Your Interests

    lifeintechnicolorii recommends this,

Visitors can easily spend a day or two exploring the grounds of the Shelburne Museum. Not only are there numerous art exhibits, but there are historical buildings throughout. Some of my personal favorites are the Ticonderoga (an old steamboat ship), the 1950's House, Circus Barn, Webb House, General Store and Apothecary. These favorites are just a small sample of everything to see. There are permanent as well as rotating exihibts and plenty of places to explore for kids who aren't willing to stand and ponder a painting.

Since the property is large, it can be tiring on hot and/or humid days to walk between buildings (most of which are not air conditioned). There is a mini bus visitors can take, but you have to sit and wait for it to come around the museum loop. It's best to have a cold drink with you to keep you going.

If you are anywhere near Shelburne, Vermont, the Shelburne Museum is a must-see for anyone with even the slightest interest in history or art.

    Disneyland for American History buffs.

Spend a day (or two) meandering through American history in this spectacular museum of art, architecture, and collectibles. "Museum" doesn't even capture the scope of Electra Havemeyer Webb's personal collections of everything from houses, barns, schoolhouses, jails, lighthouses, art, dolls, wordwork, perfume bottles, machinery, printing presses, carriages, etc, etc, etc. Here you can walk through the actual buidlings that housed this country's history. The museum also hosts exhibitions as varied as Ansel Adams to custom motorbikes, all set amid apple trees and lilacs on the beautifully-kept grounds. Perfect for families. Eat your heart out Mickey Mouse - this place is the real deal.
