Lonely Planet review for Popham Beach State Park

The 6-mile long, sandy Popham Beach State Park is one of the prettiest in the state, with views onto offshore islands and the Kennebec and Morse Rivers framing either end. Lifeguards are on hand, but the surf is strong, with undertows and riptides. It’s located off ME 209, about 14 miles south of Bath.

    Gorgeous, dynamic beach.

    philosurfer recommends this,

At low tide you can walk along the sandbar to visit an island with a small cove to swim in and a great rock face to clamber up and enjoy the views. The tides create interesting currents that you can float on to create your own version of the classic waterpark lazy river ride. The boogie boarding is good, the sand is fine, the water is cold. Get there early and stake out some real-estate where giant pieces of driftwood inspire beachgoers to create artistic lean-tos. The facilities are good, but there is no snack bar, so come prepared.
