Maine State Museum
By all means, take a gander within the Maine State Museum, ensconced in the Maine State Library and Archives adjacent to the State House. The museum traces Maine's history through an astounding 12,000 years and includes prehistoric arrowheads and tools, as well as impressive artifacts relating to Maine's role in ship-building, fishing, textiles and granite quarries.

Old Fort Western
Located in its own riverside park, Old Fort Western was originally built as a frontier outpost in 1754. The restored 16-room structure, now a museum, is New England's oldest surviving wooden fort. It's also open in the off-season - call ahead to find out the hours.

State House
Built in 1832 and enlarged in 1909, the granite State House was designed by the famed Boston architect Charles Bulfinch. You can pick up a leaflet for a self-guided tour, or pick up a red courtesy phone and request a free guided tour. Park in the lot on the southwest side of the building, near the Department of Education and Maine State Museum, and enter the capitol through the southwest door.
