Park Loop Road
Park Loop Road information
For some visitors, driving the 27-mile Park Loop Rd is the extent of their trip to Acadia National Park. On the portion called Ocean Dr, stop at lovely Sand Beach , and at Thunder Hole for a look at the surf crashing into a cleft in the granite. The effect is most dramatic with a strong incoming tide.
Otter Cliff , not far south of Thunder Hole, is basically a wall of pink granite rising right out from the sea. This area is popular with rock climbers.
The road is largely one-way; in summer you can cover the route on the Island Explorer bus system (shuttle route 4). Note that the loop road is closed in winter, and its opening may be delayed by heavy snow.
