Arthur Godfrey Road (41st Street)
It's no shtetl, but Arthur Godfrey Rd is a popular thoroughfare for the Jewish population of Miami Beach, and possibly the best place in Florida to enjoy a good reuben sandwich (and the only place outside Tel Aviv with kosher sushi houses). Just as Jews have shaped Miami Beach, so has the beach shaped its Jews: you can eat lox y arroz con moros (salmon with rice and beans) and while the Orthodox men don yarmulkes and the women wear head-scarves, they've all got nice tans and drive flashy SUVs.

'Beachfront Avenue!' The A1Acauseway, coupled with the Rickenbacker Causeway in Key Biscayne, is one of the great bridges in America, linking Miami and Miami Beach via the glittering turquoise of Biscayne Bay. To drive this road in a convertible or with the windows down, with a setting sun behind you, enormous cruise ships to the side, the palms swaying in the ocean breeze and, let's just say 'Your Love' by the Outfield on the radio, is basically the essence of Miami.

Ocean Drive
Yar, here be the belly of the South Beach beast. It's just a road, right? No, it's the great cruising strip of Miami; an endless parade of classic cars, testosterone-sweating young men, peacocklike young women, street performers, vendors, those guys who yell unintelligible crap at everyone, celebrities pretending to be tourists, tourists who want to play celebrity, beautiful people, ugly people, people people and the best ribbon of art-deco preservation on the beach. Say 'Miami.' That image in your head? Probably Ocean Drive.
