  2. Books & Books

Like its branch in Coral Gables, this beautiful indie bookstore has an excellent array of titles, especially when it comes to Floridian and Miamian history, photography, coffee-table tomes, and literature by local authors from Edna Buchanan to Carl Hiaasen. You can also catch poetry readings and author book signings.

  5. Lambda Passage

Since the mid-1980s, this bookstore has been a fixture and meeting place for gays and lesbians, and a seller of coming-out books, gay literature, rainbow paraphernalia, magazines and films. There's queer porn in the back, natch.

  6. Libreri

You don't have to read Creole or French to shop here, but it helps. Otherwise, there's as good a range of titles on Haitian history and culture (in English) as you'll find anywhere stateside, as well as crafts, recorded music and Haitian periodicals.

  7. News Café Store

Look for the separate 24-hour newsstand between the News Café bar and restaurant. It has a good selection of international and domestic papers.
