Getting there & around

Memphis International Airport (901-922-8000; www.memphisairport.org; 2491 Winchester Rd) is 12 miles southeast of downtown via I-55; a taxi to or from downtown costs $27. Try City Wide Cab Company (901-324-4202) or Yellow Cab (901-577-7777). The Downtown-Airport Shuttle (DASH; 901-522-1677; one-way $15) serves most downtown hotels.

Greyhound (901-523-1184; 203 Union Ave; 24hr) runs frequent buses to Nashville ($34, four hours); Little Rock, AR ($30, 2½ hours); and New Orleans, LA ($60, 10½ hours).

Central Station (901-526-0052; 545 S Main St; 5:45am-11:15pm), the Amtrak terminal, has been restored to its original 1914 splendor. City of New Orleans goes to Chicago, IL ($174, 10½ hours) and New Orleans, LA ($61, nine hours).

Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA; 901-274-6282; www.matatransit.com; fare $1.45) operates local buses. Schedules are available at the MATA terminal (444 N Main St; 7am-4pm Mon-Fri, 8am-4:30pm Sat). MATA’s Main Street Trolley ($1, every 12 minutes) makes a loop from Amtrak to the Pyramid via Main St and Riverside Dr.
