Lonely Planet review

Known locally as Star of the Sea, this atmospheric hostel in an 1873 lifesaving station has a million-dollar setting at Surfside Beach. As Nantucket's sole nod to the budget traveler, it books up well in advance.

Description

The Robert B. Johnson Memorial Hostel, named after a former HI-USA Executive Director, was built as a lifesaving station in 1873, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The lookout station, or cupola, is still accessible from the women's dormitory. The hostel is just minutes away from Surfside Beach and only 3.5 miles from the ferry docks and Nantucket village. At the Nantucket Hostel, there is a fully equipped kitchen for preparing your own meals, a large dining area, outdoor picnic tables and bicycle racks. There are single sex and coed dorms and the hostel is a great place to bring your group. Breakfast, wifi access and parking are free. All bed linens and a bath towel are included in the overnight rate. The hostel also has one of the few sand volleyball courts on the island! From the hostel take the bike path into town and check out the Whaling Museum to learn about the island's fascinating past. You can explore the island by bicycle, in-line skates, kayak, or on foot. Finish your day off with a seafood dinner or a sunset on the beach.
