USA branch FAQ

This branch covers: Mainland USA, Hawaii & Alaska

So many posts request the impossible - that a bunch of people who have never met you magically intuit how much you have to spend and what will make you happy on vacation, generally planning out your route for three months and helping you get discount flight reservations.

So, what can you do to get great travel advice?

1. Do your homework
The web is filled with basic information like how far it is from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon, or how…

California in end May with 2 young children

Hi all, after reading the LP and some threads here, I still have some questions that need to be confirmed.

1) Given that we plan to be in California from around 16 May to early June, and that Memorial Day starts 25 May, should this influence our decision whether to fly into LA or SF (i.e. where to start the trip from)?
2) When we rent a car, am I right that we have to return it at the same place? Is there any car rental advice or 'strategy' to share, since it's our first time doing this?
3) I…

Temporary work within 3 months

Hi everybody, I'm kinda desperate but this website seems to be pretty helpful so I hope I might get some clarification. :)
I'm from Italy, next summer I'd like to go to the States for 1/2 months as a traveler through this organization called "workaway". Don't know if you've ever heard of it, but it works pretty simply: a traveler stays at a host's place, and, in exchange for some hours' shift and some help around, gets free accommodation (and food).

My main concern is regarding the permission I…

Requesting suggestions for quality budget NY accommodation

Hi all,

I hope someone can help me with a problem I have.

Heading to the US for an east & west coast trip this summer. It's my first time in America having travelled extensively around Europe. We are four guys with similar mixed general interests of socialising, meeting people, sight-seeing and nature. We will be in NY for 4 nights in July but I'm really struggling to find accommodation that meets all our desires.

Two of us are staying in hostels for virtually the whole trip while the…

Opinions needed - San Diego to San Francisco with a 3 year old

We have one week to drive from San Diego to San Francisco in a rental the last week of April along with our 3 year old. We are trying to sort out our fundamental issue and were hoping you could help - do we just drive up the coast and take our time or do we travel over to Sequoia and Yosemite and subject our little 3 year old to a lot of car driving? Is it worth literally just driving through there or should we just go up the coast at a leisurely pace and save Yosemite for another trip? We are…

Tennessee to Cleveland tips

Myself and my husband are staying with some friends in Crossville Tennessee in a few weeks time and then have a couple of days to make our way up to Avon, Ohio. I have researched as much as I can and have a vague idea of a few routes we could take but I'm interested to know of your thoughts and ideas. I've been on the roadsideamerica website and earmarked a few quirky sights (mostly BIG roadside hilarious monuments like dragons and cats and pestle & mortars, that us Brits find so amusing)…

Tips and resources for travel during blizzard 2015

Hi travelers,

Here are some tips and resources if traveling in the US at this time. Please add your own to the thread.

  1. Check the status of the weather and warnings in your area at weather.com and do not travel where a blizzard warning or travel advisory is in place. As of midday on Tuesday (Central Time) blizzard warnings were in place for parts of six states from eastern Long Island to southern and eastern New England. Bridges and public transportation systems remain closed in some areas.…

Cheap car rental options for Dalton Highway, Alaska?

I'm thinking of doing a road trip on Dalton Highway in Alaska this September. The few car rental companies I found online that specifically allow vehicles to go on Dalton Highway seem to be incredibly pricey, around the range of $700-$1000 for 3-4 days. I also saw online someone mentioning about National Car allowing people to drive on unpaved roads at an extra cost, but upon calling them, this is untrue.

I was just wondering if there are any other cheaper car rental options out there for me to…
