Introducing Southwest Harbor & Bass Harbor
More laid-back and less affluent than Northeast Harbor, 'Southwest' is also quite tranquil. But that's a bit deceiving: it's also a major boat-building center and a commercial fishing harbor.
From the Upper Town Dock – a quarter-mile along Clark Point Rd from the flashing light in the center of town – boats venture out into Frenchman Bay to the Cranberry Isles.
A few miles south of Southwest Harbor lies the somnolent fishing village of Bass Harbor, home to the Bass Harbor Head Light. Built in 1858, the 26ft lighthouse still has a Fresnel lens from 1902.
