Lonely Planet review

Be sure to flesh out any plantation tour with a visit to the River Road African American Museum , 25 miles further along in Donaldsonville. This excellent museum preserves the important history of African Americans in the rural communities along the Mississippi. Exhibits chronicle plantation slavery; the journey to freedom via the Underground Railroad, and the lives of free African American people. Donaldsonville itself was a prosperous city for African Americans after the Civil War and the site of the original African American Mardi Gras.
