Lonely Planet review for Venice Boardwalk

Venice Boardwalk is officially known as Ocean Front Walk. It’s a freak show, a human zoo and a wacky carnival, but as far as LA experiences go, it’s a must. This is where to get your hair braided, your karma corrected or your back massaged qi gong–style. Encounters with budding Schwarzeneggers, hoop dreamers, a Speedo-clad snake charmer and a roller-skating Sikh minstrel are pretty much guaranteed, especially on hot summer days. The Sunday-afternoon drum circle draws hundreds of revelers for tribal playing and spontaneous dancing. If the noise doesn’t show you the way there, just follow your nose towards whiffs of ‘wacky tabaccy.’ Alas, the boardwalk vibe gets a bit sketchy after dark.

If you're in LA/Santa Monica/Venice, hit this place up

    ridermike recommends this,

The boardwalk in Venice is nice, there's the beach itself to the west, and shops to the east, with plenty of local buskers to dodge in between, trying to sell you all sorts of stuff. You might like some of it. Plenty of tourists and people about, and there's a separate "boardwalk" for bicycles/skateboards/etc, though they do intermingle periodically.

    Fun and freaky!

    remelila recommends this,

A day trip to Venice Boardwalk is a great alternative to the chi-chi plastic style of much of the rest of L.A. From roller-skating disco tragics and exhibitionist bodybuilders to new-age tarot readers and bikini-bottomed beach bunnies, a walk along here is guaranteed to be, at the very least, interesting.

If you have time, take a stroll along the Venice Beach canals a couple of blocks to the east.

    Good for: walking, people-watching, beach-lovers
