Lonely Planet review for Griffith Observatory

Above Los Feliz loom the iconic triple domes of the 1935 Griffith Observatory. A recent makeover brought a super-techie star projector to its planetarium and doubled the exhibit space, including films in the Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon Theater. During clear night-time skies, you can often peer through the telescopes at heavenly bodies.

    Highly, highly, highly recommend this place

    This place is a MUST. Free parking for motorcycles (I rode in from Toronto, I don't know about cars), free entrance/admission, and lots of interesting science things to do and see. Plan at least 2-4 hours, as the view outside is phenomenal. If you're there at night, they'll let you peer through their main telescope, if you wait in line (line can be 1 hour in length, but it's well worth it, and you're not just standing there waiting, for the last 10-15 minutes, as you can hear the guides talk about it), and alternatively downstairs on the main grounds they'll bring out 2x telescopes with equal viewing power to gaze at things. They'll usually have much shorter lines as people assume they're weaker in power.

    Beautiful views, and a beautiful building.

    The Observatory is less than stellar, but the building it is in is beautiful. The views are some of the best in LA, and there are great hikes all around the observatory. A must see on a trip to LA. GO ON A CLEAR DAY!

    I went here with locals and found the views to be nice and the science exhibits wonderful. A nice place to go on a saturday afternoon.
