Lonely Planet review for Santa Monica State Beach

There are endless ways to play on the 3.5-mile blanket of strand stretching from Venice Beach in the south to Will Rogers State Beach in the north. To reserve time on a beach volley-ball court, call and confirm applicable fees. For cerebral pursuits, settle in at a first-come first-served chess table at Chess Park, just south of the Santa Monica pier. As of October 2006, smoking is no longer permitted on Santa Monica beaches.

    Excellent

    ridermike recommends this,

I've been here many times since arriving at Santa Monica along my North American motorcycle tour, and since I stay about 3 km from this place, I frequent it on foot. It's beautiful, lots of people, hard-working entertainer/buskers, the 3rd Street Promenade and Santa Monica Mall are here, all within a quick 5 minute walk of each other. The beach itself is nice, though it can get a little busy, but it's very long and very wide, so it's inevitable that you will find a spot if you want to go there to enjoy the beach itself. There are shops and a carnival-like entertainment complex on the Santa Monica Pier itself, which is extremely child-oriented.

I would highly recommend this to anyone visiting Santa Monica.
