Lonely Planet review for Getty Center

The Getty Center presents triple delights: a stellar art collection, Richard Meier's fabulous architecture and Robert Irwin's seasonally changing gardens. On clear days, add breathtaking views of the city and ocean to the list. A great time to visit is in the late afternoon after the crowds have thinned. Parking is $10.

#1 thing to do in LA WITHOUT EXAGGERATION

    ridermike recommends this,

This is, by orders of magnitude, and I truly mean many, many, many orders of magnitude, the #1 thing to see in all of the LA area, bar none. It has original paintings from the greats, and all sorts of incredible history to view and learn from. You would be doing yourself a HUGE disservice if you came to LA and didn't experience this museum.

    Free to enter
    Free parking for motorcycles
The architecture and layout of the buildings is amazing
The exhibits are original and historic, priceless and timeless
The staff are friendly and helpful and professional
The view of LA is phenomenal
You get a tram ride to and from the parking lot

There's also a Getty Villa right off the PCH (Highway 1, near Pacific Palisades) which features sculptures primarily, and is also worth seeing. In fact, go there first and THEN come to the Getty Center so you'll be in a constant state of increasing awe. I did it the other way around, Getty Center first, then the Getty Villa, and both were amazing and gorgeous.

I've been there two times in one month of staying in Santa Monica while on a tour of North America on my motorcycle, and I would absolutely go a third time before I leave to continue my journey.

Pre-teen kids may find it dull and boring, though, unless they are very intellectually mature,
