Lonely Planet review for El Cholo
Happy hipsters, hungry families and rowdy birthday parties compete for tables at this festive two-story adobe landmark. A handful grumble that the food is so-so, but the blue-corn chicken enchiladas, potent margaritas and a buzzing lounge keep most everyone coming back for more.

Enjoyable authentic dining experience
ridermike recommends this,
I went here with my sister and we had a great meal for about $25 each. It's an excellent place to eat with very nice decor, very nice food, and validated parking. I would recommend this to anyone looking for an authentic Mexican dining experience in the LA area.

nice people, great food

I've only been to the one in Pasadena (on Fair Oaks), but I assume it's like the one in L.A. El Cholo is where nachos were first introduced to L.A., and the El Cholo waitress who popularized it recently passed away. I found the food very good. I've eaten a lot of Mexican food around L.A., and this food ranks in the top for me. The serving sizes are generous (but that is common around here), and the food tastes fresh, not soggy. The waiters and staff are very friendly, and I hear the tamales are superior, though I haven't tried them yet.
