Lonely Planet review

On a jetty between a marina and a calm channel off the Pacific (rooms face one or the other), awash in whites and blues, the already classy Portofino has just received an US$11 million makeover, and it shows.

Although all rooms are well appointed (with wi-fi, minibars, bathrobes etc), the experience (and the price) depends on your view. Ocean rooms look out over a jetty and a colony of sea lions (ear plugs provided just in case). On the marina side, the quaint view of yachts is tempered by the power plant beyond them, though it's partially hidden behind an attractive mural by Wyland, a noted artist of undersea scenes. Ocean-view suites have double-sided fireplaces. Other features include a diminutive swimming pool and a fine restaurant/lounge, Baleen, which feels nautical by day and romantic by night. The Portofino gets its share of business visitors Sunday through Thursday, and on weekends it's all about vacationers.
