Owner and actress Beverly Garland oversees this sprawling, well landscaped property with seven-story towers and Mission-style accents (paying homage to its location on the former El Camino Real). Families should ask about the kids' suites, complete with bunk beds, CD and DVD players, a PlayStation console, refrigerator and microwave.

While its San Fernando Valley location in the shadow of the Hollywood Fwy (Hwy 101) isn't exciting, this pleasant property goes beyond the call of duty. For starters: heated swimming pool, tennis courts, and a fitness room that would be the envy of hotels twice the price. It also provides free shuttle buses to Universal Studios. Don't come expecting luxury amenities, although management is plunking down serious coin into renovations which are giving the once dowdy rooms a slicker, more 21st-century feel (while maintaining its reasonable prices). Ask for a room facing away from the freeway for a little more quiet. Discretion means that many entertainment industry guests choose this property.
