Lonely Planet review

In an age of chain motels, this lovingly tended, 21-unit, nonsmoking inn run by a friendly family is a breath of fresh air. The rooms have been put through a recent face-lift and now feature crisp furnishings and high-speed internet.

At first it's a bit puzzling why anyone would pay hotel rates to stay at what's essentially a (very attractively) spruced-up little motel from 1947...until you look closer. The location's convenient (if you have a car), the landscaping's handsome (lavender, rosemary, citrus etc), and the whitewashed architecture gives you a taste of true California bungalow style. You'll also find thoughtful extras like tea, fruit and bottled water 24/7, light continental breakfast, parking and wi-fi. Eco-friendly amenities include organic bed sheets, corn-fibre blankets and tankless water heaters. Tight bathrooms can be quite a squeeze and the windows, though thick-paned, don't completely keep out noise from busy Sunset Blvd. Despite these drawbacks, this inn has a loyal following of repeat visitors who rave about the tidy accommodations and almost concierge level of service provided by the owners.

Our independent authors have visited Brentwood Inn and selected this as one of our recommended boutique hotels in Westwood & Around.
