This garage-sized tropical tavern packs in showbiz folks from neighboring KCET TV station, grizzled old-timers and local scenesters for sweet and wickedly strong drinks (try a Rae's Mistake, named for the bar's founder). The under-the-sea decor is surreal. Cash only.

    A Polynesian freak-out in the middle of nowhere

    In the checkerboard desolation of LA's sprawl, you drive along a distinctly unpromising stretch of road before you see a lone hut that looks like a bunch of stoner scouts built it.

    Step into the long, dark, narrow room spackled with Tiki trash, get to know Mike, Mark or Michael behind the bar (the Buhen boys carrying on the cockamamie tradition of this bar) and prepare to have a lost weekend in the space of a couple of hours.

    Drinks here are WILD - Ray's Mistake is an enduring classic, while Tiki Gold is a daintier drop with a hidden punch. Be warned - these fabulous concoctions will drop you harder than a bad habit so make sure you help yourself to a paper bowl of snacks from the big plastic bin on the bar to soak up some of the devil within.
