Vdara, The Opening Night
Blog: VEGAS HAPPENS HERE - 2 December 2009
[Correction: That really is a Rauschenberg. It's on loan from Bellagio. I guess it wasn't part of the $40m acquisition, so it wasn't promoted. I stand corrected.]

The Sun's Fired, An Accounting
Blog: VEGAS HAPPENS HERE - 2 December 2009
I'm working to provide a full accounting of those fired at the Las Vegas Sun yesterday. So many have had such important careers in Vegas that someone must acknowledge that as well as explain what was lost.

CityCenter Three Ways, So Far
Blog: VEGAS HAPPENS HERE - 1 December 2009
Consistent blogging has been curtailed for the past few weeks by mammoth amount of coverage I've had to prepare in a relatively short period of time about, of course, CityCenter. As I told CEO Jim Murren during our interview last month, I don't know if this thing will save Vegas but it's sure as sugar saved my fourth quarter.

This show is UP: Doyle Brunson Loses A Bet
Blog: VEGAS HAPPENS HERE - 1 December 2009
Here's this week's show in which I won a $100 bet off the great Doyle Brunson. FULL DISCLOSURE, we gave the money to the cocktail waitress who served us in Bobby's Room during the interview. Also, Norm Clarke joined us live to answer the trivia question and explain the Anna Quindlen-Wayne Newton incident. Click on the date below to make it play or right-click to save it and listen at your leisure.

EXCLUSIVE: GOODMAN REACTS TO BETTE-GATE
Blog: VEGAS HAPPENS HERE - 30 November 2009
I'm just off the line with Mayor Oscar Goodman, whom I had called for another story, and I quizzed him about the TMZ.Com video that came out over the weekend in which he called an auction bidder a "fat and short Bette Midler." Click below to see it for yourself, it's about 45 seconds:

Bizarre Attack, Destroyed For Sport
Blog: VEGAS HAPPENS HERE - 28 November 2009
You may recall that a few months ago, the Vegas media world was in an uproar over some truly spectacular corruption committed by inexplicably still-employed KTNV anchor Nina Radetich. The anchor had tipped off an auto repair shop that her station was about to air some negative reports and suggested the owner call Nina's own boyfriend, a damage-control PR specialist.

The Show is UP: Bill Boyd
Blog: VEGAS HAPPENS HERE - 18 November 2009
Here's this week's show. At the end of it, Miles shouts out for your Vietnamese and Thai favorites (no Lotus of Siam, please), so go ahead and share if you wish in the comments here. Otherwise, the banter this week is especially amusing and we hope you enjoy it all. Click on the date below to make it play or right-click to save it and listen at your leisure.

Sorry for the late notice, but we'll be live from 4-6 pm at LVRocks.Com doing an hour of The Petcast and then an hour of The Strip. Our guest on the Petcast is Beverly Washburn, the actress who played the little girl in "Old Yeller" way back when, talking about the iconic animal flick. On the Strip, we'll be playing my conversation with Bill Boyd, executive chairman of Boyd Gaming, in which he talks about the Mob, his regrets about Echelon and making a play for Station properties.

Bette Midler Fans Unite! Ack!
Blog: VEGAS HAPPENS HERE - 12 November 2009
Eek! The Bette peeps are pipin' mad over this week's Las Vegas Weekly "Strip Sense" column assessing Bette Midler's disappointing level of community involvement and less-than-Cher-y level of sales. And AEG tells me Bette sold the most tickets for the Colosseum last year which is kind of cheating since she also had the most shows. Oh well. I stand by my point of view. -sfBette Midler leaving after seemingly unhappy residencyBy STEVE FRIESS

Maybe My Best Piece This Year
Blog: VEGAS HAPPENS HERE - 11 November 2009
Earlier this year, I read a fascinating piece in the R-J by Keith Rogers about a North Las Vegas man whose father had perished in World War II. The man never knew his dad, having been born two weeks after his cargo plane crashed in the Himalayas somewhere. But Arizona adventurer Clayton Kuhles had found the plane -- and 14 others -- in an effort that picks up the serious slack in the US government's efforts to recover MIAs from World War II.

The Show is UP: Lily Tomlin
Blog: VEGAS HAPPENS HERE - 11 November 2009
This was a particularly fun one because interviewing someone like Lily Tomlin is not what one would reasonably expect from a journalistic career in Las Vegas. (Others who fit this bill have included Harvey Fierstein, Maya Lin and Dominick Dunne.) I hope you agree I made the most of it. My $67.48 WSOP-Rio Vegas Adventure
Blog: VEGAS HAPPENS HERE - 10 November 2009
Yesterday morning, having watched the World Series of Poker for 17 hours and stayed up all night, I had a hallucination driving home. It was 6 a.m. and I had a seven-mile straight-shot to get there, but there was a man standing on a traffic island who stepped off it. That's all he did and I wasn't near him, but the nightmare scenario went through my mind that I was beyond exhausted and could have killed him if I had been in that lane.

The M's Limp Top Chef Catch-Up Try
Blog: VEGAS HAPPENS HERE - 9 November 2009
Now that it's universally agreed that the M Resort has blown its moment in the spotlight by not doing anything Top Chef-ish and places like Mandalay Bay and the Wynn are heavily promoting their involvements, someone over there decided to do this:

CityCenter's CLASSLESS Move
Blog: VEGAS HAPPENS HERE - 7 November 2009
They go and commission the great architect Sir Norman Foster to build a hotel-condo called the Harmon. Then, because of construction defects, bad economic foresight and lax oversight, they chop it in half, lose the condos and delay the opening by a year. And now they turn it into that crassest and lamest of New Vegas tropes, a billboard?
