Holy fashion, this attractive open-air shopping mall could compete on an international runway with some of Asia's most famous malls. And the shoppers are top-shelf fashionistas, stocking up on couture. The usual mall anchors are here, (Sears and Macy's) as are the designer name brands (you name it) and the trendy teen brands (Abercrombie & Fitch).

A favorite for local color is the Crack Seed Center, where you can just scoop from jars full of pickled mangoes, candied ginger, dried cuttlefish and banzai (rice crackers, nuts and dried fish) mix. The ground floor or the shopping center is also the hub for TheBus service.

    Love this Center, especially the food court!

    Every year my family comes back here for the Yummy's BBQ plate in the food court - selection of 4 sides, 2 scoops of white rice, a scoop of mac salad, and the meat (we love the Bulgolgi and Kalbi) of course! But there is all the varieties you need from basic eats like pizza to Chinese to the familiar Jamba Juice or Cinnabon. But don't think you will be left out if you prefer the high-end; just check out http://www.alamoanacenter.com to pick what tickles your fancy.

    In general, great place to walk around to pick up souvenirs like Hawaiian Calendars at the now-only-in-Hawaii Long's Drugs or at the Hilo-Hattie shop if you don't have time to make it to the big store. Usually, there is also entertainment at the stage with seating at that level and the level above (a glass railing allows safety with great views). With a huge variety of stops like Shirokiya, Crazy Shirts, Forever 21, Apple Store, MAC Makeup and Sephora, and even the U.S. Post Office, the entire family can find what they need here.

    There's even a beach across the street if part of your group wants to soak up sun while the others explore the Center.
