    Ba Le Bake Shoppe

A corruption of the word 'Paris,' this Vietnamese bakery-café is one of an islandwide chain established by a recent Vietnamese immigrant. The simple shop is best known for its chewy baguette sandwiches, but you can also scratch that spring-roll itch. For a caffeine jolt, there's an equally chewy cup of coffee served with loads of sugar and milk, either hot or iced. There is another outlet on N King St.

  2. B

    Coffees 'n' Epicurea

A coffee-tasting room is an unlikely place for this patisserie with flaky pastries, delicate éclairs and gorgeous pies. (The baker defected from the Kohala Coast resorts.) A back patio has greenery and some seating, and its gift shop is surprisingly sophisticated, obviously catering to a crowd beyond the tour-bus norm. It's on the makai side at the 106-mile marker.

  3. C

    Saint Germain

The setting is an ordinary storefront through which even the mourning doves saunter with bravado. Starting with delicious croissants, this little French bakery presents a tasty variety of soups, salads and hearty baguette sandwiches, all made fresh to order with a dozen vegetarian and meat fillings to select from.

    Moana Bakery & Café

Since Moana's French pastry master left to start his own restaurant, the pastries here have lost their edge, but everything else remains right on at this hip restaurant. The blackened 'ahi wrap sandwich served with mango-pineapple salsa and Moloka'i sweet potatoes is a sure winner.

  5. E

    Ted's Bakery

Beloved by all, this sweet-tooth mecca peddles piles and piles of cinnamon rolls and butter buns to surfers, daytrippers and construction workers. If you miss out on those, then settle for a slice of chocolate haupia (coconut) pie or moist carrot cake. It is opposite Sunset Beach.

Kilauea Bakery & Pau Hana Pizza

Go early for the best selection of gooey mac-nut sticky buns, sourdough loaves, tropical Danish pastries, etc - they can sell out before noon. The pizza is rather bready, but features tasty toppings like smoked ono, Kilauea goat cheese and fresh sugarloaf pineapple.

    Komoda Store & Bakery

Justifiably famous throughout the islands for its mouth-watering cream puffs and liliko'i (passion fruit) malasadas, this generations-old family bakery makes the perfect morning stop. And the emphasis is on mornings 'cause it often sells out by noon.

This bakery makes whole-grain breads, inexpensive pastries and tempting Portuguese malasadas served fresh. Match them with a cup of coffee and the newspaper and let the vacation begin.
