Lonely Planet review for Valley of the Temples

The Valley of the Temples is an interdenominational cemetery in a stunning setting just off the Kahekili Hwy. For most visitors the main attraction is Byodo-In, the 'Temple of Equality.' Dedicated in 1968 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Hawaii, Byodo-In is a replica of the 950-year-old temple in Kyoto, Japan. For a panoramic view of the valley, head up to the hilltop mausoleum with the cross.

The Byodo-In temple's symmetry is a classic example of Japanese Heian architecture and garden design symbolizing the Pure Land of Mahayana Buddhism. The seated 9ft-tall tall Buddha in the main hall is positioned to catch the first rays of morning sunlight.

The reds of the elegant temple against the deep green of the Ko'olau Range is strikingly picturesque, especially when mist settles over the pali. A three-ton brass bell beside the large pond is said to bring tranquility and good fortune to those who ring it. It's all very Japanese, right down to the gift shop selling imported sake cups, daruma (good luck) dolls and happy Buddhas.

There are no buses directly to Byodo-In, but bus 55 can drop passengers off near the cemetery entrance on Kahekili Hwy, 1.5 miles north of Haiku Rd. From there, it's 0.75 miles to the temple.
