Getting there & around
Most travelers to Maui arrive at Kahului International Airport (OGG; 808-872-3830), the busiest airport in Hawaii outside Honolulu. From the airport, shuttle buses service the main tourist destinations. Executive Shuttle (808-669-2300, 800-833-2303) has the best prices, charging $26 to Kihei and $36 to Lahaina.
The island’s public bus system, Maui Bus (Roberts Hawaii 808-871-4838, Maui County 808-270-7511; www.mauicounty.gov/bus), operates several daily routes (fares $1) that service the main towns, including Kahului, Lahaina, Wailuku, Kihei and Wailea. However, to really explore Maui you need your own wheels; in addition to the major car-rental companies at the airport, consider the ecofriendly, biodiesel-fueled cars at Bio-Beetle (808-873-6121, 877-873-6121; www.bio-beetle.com), which start at $50/230 a day/week.
